No, ants cannot hear you talk in the way humans hear sound because they do not have ears or eardrums that detect airborne sound waves like human speech, but they can detect vibrations and some chemical signals that allow them to sense disturbances near them. Ants primarily communicate through pheromones which are chemical signals and through touch with their antennae, rather than through sound. However, ants do have sensory organs that detect vibrations in the ground and surfaces through specialized hairs on their legs and bodies, so if you talk loudly near them and cause vibrations on a table or floor, they may detect those vibrations as a disturbance and move away, but they do not understand speech or hear the words. Some ant species can produce sounds by rubbing body parts together, called stridulation, which creates faint chirps that other ants can detect through vibrations in the nest, used as alarm signals, but this is not hearing speech. Research shows that ants are sensitive to substrate-borne vibrations and can respond to them by freezing or fleeing, which helps them avoid predators. So while your voice creates air pressure waves and slight vibrations, ants do not hear you talking as humans do and cannot interpret human language, but they may sense your presence through vibrations if you are close enough and move away if they feel threatened. For pest control purposes, talking does not affect ant behavior, and they will continue following pheromone trails to food regardless of noise, so control requires sanitation, sealing entry points, and baiting rather than sound.
