When not to use a paint sprayer includes several situations where spraying would be inefficient, risky, or produce worse results than roller and brush, so you should avoid sprayer in those cases. Do not use paint sprayer in windy outdoor conditions, as wind causes overspray drift that wastes paint and can damage cars, plants, and neighboring property. Do not use sprayer in small, enclosed indoor spaces without proper ventilation and masking, because overspray can cover everything including floors, furniture, and fixtures, requiring extensive prep, and fumes can be hazardous. Do not use sprayer for very small touch-up jobs or single small wall, as setup, cleaning, and masking time will exceed time saved, roller and brush are faster. Do not use sprayer when you cannot mask or protect surrounding areas, such as occupied homes with furniture, or near cars. Do not use sprayer for thick textured coatings that sprayer cannot atomize properly. Do not use airless sprayer for fine automotive basecoat and clearcoat where HVLP is needed for fine finish, and do not use HVLP for large house exterior where airless is faster. Do not use sprayer in cold or humid conditions that affect drying. Also not use sprayer if you lack proper safety gear like respirator, goggles, and coveralls. So avoid sprayer in wind, small jobs, unmasked occupied spaces, and wrong sprayer type for material.
