HVLP stands for High Volume Low Pressure, which describes a type of paint spray gun technology designed to provide high volume of air at low pressure to atomize paint efficiently with less overspray and higher transfer efficiency compared to conventional high-pressure spray guns. In HVLP system, high volume means large amount of air, typically 10 to 15 cubic feet per minute CFM, delivered to gun, and low pressure means low air pressure at air cap, around 10 PSI at air cap for compliance with environmental regulations, though inlet pressure at gun handle is higher around 26 to 29 PSI. This design results in softer spray, less bounce-back, less overspray, and transfer efficiency of 65 percent or more, meaning more paint lands on surface and less is wasted in air, compared to conventional guns with only 30 to 40 percent efficiency. HVLP was developed to meet VOC and environmental regulations, particularly in California, to reduce paint waste and pollution. HVLP spray guns are widely used for automotive painting for basecoat and clearcoat, furniture and cabinet finishing, and fine finishing where quality finish matters. So HVLP stands for High Volume Low Pressure, describing air volume and pressure characteristics that make it efficient and environmentally friendly.
