What is better between HVLP and airless depends on your project type, as they are designed for different purposes and excel in different areas. HVLP, high volume low pressure, is better for fine finishing, automotive painting, furniture, cabinets, and trim where smooth glossy finish, precise control, and less overspray matter, providing fine atomization, high transfer efficiency, and ability to spray basecoat, clearcoat, lacquers, and varnishes with excellent quality, but it is slower and requires large air compressor delivering 10 to 15 CFM and cannot spray thick unthinned latex house paint well. Airless is better for large areas, house interior and exterior walls, fences, decks, and commercial buildings where speed and coverage of thick latex paint matter more than fine finish, using high-pressure pump up to 3000 PSI to spray unthinned latex directly from 5-gallon bucket, covering hundreds of square feet quickly, saving 50 to 75 percent time compared to rollers, but it produces more overspray and less fine finish than HVLP. So HVLP is better for automotive, furniture, and fine detail where finish quality is priority. Airless is better for house painting, large walls, and thick coatings where speed is priority. Many professionals own both, using airless for walls and HVLP for trim and cars.
