Most pests hate strong, pungent smells that interfere with their ability to find food or that irritate their sensory organs, and the most universally disliked smells across many pest species are peppermint, vinegar, citrus, and eucalyptus, though smell alone rarely eliminates an infestation. Peppermint oil is one of the top smells pests hate because its strong menthol scent disrupts ant pheromone trails and is said to repel spiders, cockroaches, and mosquitoes when diluted and sprayed around entry points, baseboards, and windows, though scientific studies show only short-term deterrence. White vinegar with its acidic smell is disliked by ants and fruit flies and is useful for wiping down countertops to erase scent trails. Citrus scents including lemon, orange, and citronella are disliked by mosquitoes and ants, and citronella is used in outdoor candles and torches to deter mosquitoes within a small area. Eucalyptus oil repels mosquitoes and ticks and is an ingredient in some EPA-registered repellents. Other smells most pests hate include tea tree oil which repels cockroaches and bed bugs mildly, lavender which is said to repel moths, fleas, and mosquitoes and is used in sachets for closets, cedarwood which repels moths and silverfish, cinnamon which can deter ants, and bay leaves which cockroaches avoid. For rodents, peppermint is also commonly cited but studies show limited effectiveness. While these smells can make areas less attractive temporarily, they do not kill colonies, so for German cockroaches, bed bugs, termites, and rodents, sanitation, sealing cracks, and targeted baits or professional treatment are needed for lasting control.
