Bleach does not effectively keep bugs away long term and is not recommended as a pest repellent or primary pest control method, though it can kill some insects on direct contact and disinfect surfaces that attract pests. Bleach, which is sodium hypochlorite, is a strong disinfectant and cleaner that can kill germs and remove food residues and odors that attract ants and cockroaches, so cleaning countertops, floors, and garbage cans with a diluted bleach solution of one tablespoon per quart of water can make kitchens less attractive to pests by removing crumbs and pheromone trails. However, bleach has a strong smell that dissipates quickly and does not create a lasting barrier, and most pests including German cockroaches, bed bugs, termites, and ants will return once the smell fades if food and moisture remain. Spraying bleach directly on insects may kill some soft-bodied pests like ants on contact, but it is ineffective against hidden colonies, eggs, and pests in wall voids, and it can damage surfaces, discolor fabrics, irritate skin, eyes, and lungs, and harm pets if not rinsed properly. For mosquitoes, bleach in standing water can kill larvae but also harms beneficial organisms and is not safe for the environment. For bed bugs, bleach does not penetrate mattress seams where they hide and can damage fabrics. Pest control professionals advise against using bleach as a repellent and recommend instead integrated pest management including sanitation, sealing entry points, using gel baits for cockroaches and ants, and hiring professionals for severe infestations. So bleach helps with cleanliness but does not keep bugs away.
