Dawn dish soap does not strongly repel bugs in the long term, but it can kill many soft-bodied insects on contact and help deter some pests when mixed correctly, making it a useful short-term homemade tool rather than a true repellent. Dish soap works as an insecticide by breaking down the waxy outer coating of insects and disrupting their cell membranes, causing them to dehydrate and suffocate, which is effective against soft-bodied pests like aphids, whiteflies, spider mites, mealybugs, and young caterpillars when sprayed directly. A common recipe is one tablespoon of Dawn, one tablespoon of vegetable oil, and one quart of water sprayed directly on plant leaves, which can kill these garden pests within hours. For hard-bodied pests like German cockroaches, bed bugs, and beetles, dish soap alone is much less effective and does not kill colonies. As a repellent, the soapy smell may temporarily deter some insects like ants when used to wipe down trails and remove pheromones, and a mixture of dish soap and water sprayed around entry points may discourage spiders and ants for a short time, but the effect fades quickly once dry and does not prevent reinfestation. Some people use Dawn and water as a fruit fly trap by adding a few drops to apple cider vinegar to break surface tension and drown flies. While Dawn is considered low toxicity to humans and pets when used diluted, it can damage some plants if used in strong concentrations, so test first. For lasting control, sanitation and baits are needed.
