There is no spray that truly rejuvenates old asphalt shingles back to new condition, and most products marketed as rejuvenators have limited proven benefit and may affect warranties. However, there are several types of sprays marketed for this purpose. Asphalt shingle rejuvenator sprays, often bio-based emulsions using soybean oil or other plant oils, claim to restore lost oils to aged, brittle shingles to make them more flexible and darker. Brands like Roof Shampoo Rejuvenator, Greener Shingles, and various soybean oil based treatments fall into this category. While they may temporarily improve appearance and flexibility, independent testing shows limited long-term lifespan extension, and some shingle manufacturers warn that coatings can trap moisture or interfere with sealant strips and may void warranties. Protective sprays that are more legitimate include algae inhibitors containing zinc or copper that prevent biological growth, and clear water repellents specifically labeled safe for asphalt, though most asphalt shingles are already water resistant. The most effective way to rejuvenate the look of shingles is actually cleaning, not coating. Cleaning with oxygen bleach or products like Spray and Forget removes black algae streaks and makes shingles look significantly newer without coating. For actual life extension, proper attic ventilation, prompt repair of damaged shingles, gutter cleaning, and keeping debris off the roof are far more effective than any spray.
