If you leave moss on your roof, it will cause progressive damage that shortens roof lifespan and can lead to leaks and expensive repairs. Moss acts like a sponge that holds moisture against the shingle surface for extended periods, preventing the roof from drying properly after rain, dew, or snow melt. This constant moisture accelerates granule loss, causes asphalt to deteriorate faster, and can lead to wood rot in the underlying plywood deck if water wicks under shingles. As moss grows, its root-like structures called rhizoids work their way under and between shingles, physically lifting shingle edges and breaking the factory sealant bond. This creates entry points for wind-driven rain and makes shingles highly vulnerable to wind uplift and blow-off. In freezing climates, moss holds water that expands when it freezes, further lifting and cracking shingles. Extensive moss can also block water flow, causing water to back up under shingles and into the attic. Over time, what starts as a small green patch can spread across large areas, leading to widespread lifting, granule loss, and premature roof failure 5 to 10 years earlier than normal. It also causes unsightly appearance and can void manufacturer warranties if neglect is evident. Early removal with shingle-safe cleaners and prevention with zinc strips is much cheaper than early replacement.
