Balsa wood is universally recognized as the weakest and softest commercial wood, featuring an extremely low density and a Janka hardness rating near the bottom of the scale. Despite being botanically classified as a hardwood because it comes from a broad-leaved flowering tree, balsa's cellular structure consists of large, air-filled cavities with very little solid cell wall material, making it lightweight, spongy, and structurally weak under heavy loads. However, this unique ultra-light property makes it ideal for specialized applications like model airplane construction, surfboards, and protective packaging cores.
