The rarest sand in the world is considered to be sand from very unique and limited locations, with several contenders for rarest. One of the rarest is star sand from Okinawa, Japan, which is made of tiny star-shaped shells of foraminifera and is found only on a few beaches. Another extremely rare sand is the green sand from Papakolea Beach in Hawaii, which gets its color from olivine crystals and is one of only four green sand beaches in the world. Pink sand from Bermuda and the Bahamas is also rare, made from crushed red foraminifera mixed with white quartz. Black sand is common in volcanic areas but pure black sand with high gem content is rare. The rarest commercially sold sand is probably purple sand from Pfeiffer Beach in California, colored by manganese garnet. The rarest of all might be the sand from the Hyams Beach in Australia, which is considered the whitest sand in the world due to extremely pure quartz, or the sand from the Coromandel Peninsula containing gold. Some collectors consider glass sand made from natural fulgurites, lightning-fused sand, as rarest because it forms only during lightning strikes. In general, any sand with unique biological or mineral composition limited to a single beach is considered rare and often protected by law.
