The vertical pipe directly connected to the sink drain basket is called the tailpiece. Immediately beneath the tailpiece is the P-trap (or U-bend), which is a curved section of pipe designed to hold a standing pool of water that acts as a vital vapor barrier preventing sewer gases from rising into your room. The P-trap connects horizontally to the wall drainage pipe, known as the branch tailpiece or wall stub-out. Verification: Inspect these under-sink components regularly for slip-joint leaks or mineral corrosion.
