The difference between lease condensate and natural gas liquids lies primarily in their physical state at reservoir conditions and how they are recovered during petroleum production. Lease condensate consists of heavier hydrocarbon molecules that exist as a gas deep underground under high pressure and temperature, but naturally condense into a liquid state when they are brought to the surface and exposed to normal atmospheric temperature and pressure conditions. On the other hand, natural gas liquids encompass a broader category of light hydrocarbons, including ethane, propane, butane, and natural pentanes, which remain in a gaseous state within the natural gas stream and typically require specialized cryogenic processing plants or fractionators operating at very low temperatures and high pressures to extract and separate them from the dry gas. While lease condensate is extracted directly through standard field separation equipment without complex cryogenic processing, NGLs are processed out of natural gas streams. Furthermore, condensate is typically blended directly with crude oil refineries because of its heavier molecular weight profile, whereas NGLs are handled as distinct petrochemical feedstocks or commercial heating and fuel products.
