Condensate refers to the liquid substance formed when a gas or vapor undergoes a phase change and cools down into a liquid state. In the context of residential and commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, condensate specifically means the water that accumulates as humid indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coils during the cooling cycle. As the warm air is chilled, it can no longer hold as much moisture, causing the water vapor to liquefy and drip away from the metal fins. Beyond air conditioning, the term condensate is also widely used in industrial power plants, chemical processing, and steam systems to describe water that has condensed from steam after releasing its latent heat across a turbine or heat exchanger. Managing condensate is a critical engineering requirement across all these applications to prevent corrosion, blockages, or mechanical damage. In everyday home maintenance, when people refer to condensate, they are talking about the water that continuously drains from their indoor air handler through a dedicated PVC pipe system to the outside of the building.
