Condensation manifests in various ways in nature and meteorology, typically classified into four primary types based on how and where the water vapor cools. First is dew, which forms when moisture-laden air comes into direct contact with cool ground-level surfaces like grass, leaves, or stones that have radiated their heat away after sunset. Second is frost, a specialized form of deposition where water vapor bypasses the liquid phase entirely and freezes directly into ice crystals when surface temperatures drop below freezing. Third is fog, which occurs when a large volume of moist air cools down near the earth's surface, suspending a dense cloud of microscopic water droplets in the air and reducing visibility. Fourth is clouds, formed high up in the atmosphere when warm, moist air rises, expands, and cools adiabatically at higher altitudes, causing water vapor to condense around tiny airborne particles called condensation nuclei. Each of these four types represents a different environmental setting for the exact same underlying thermodynamic phase change.
