Safety Category 3 refers to safety classification in machinery safety standards like EN ISO 13849 and EN 954-1, indicating performance level of safety-related control systems to prevent accidents. Safety Category 3 means system uses redundant architecture with two channels and monitoring to ensure single fault does not lead to loss of safety function, and faults are detected where possible, providing high level of safety. Category B is basic, Category 1 uses well-tried components, Category 2 includes periodic testing, Category 3 includes redundancy so if one channel fails, other still provides safety function, and Category 4 provides highest level with continuous monitoring and fault tolerance. For example, emergency stop circuit in tractor or factory machine designed to Category 3 would have two separate relays and cross-monitoring so if one relay sticks, other still stops machine. In electrical safety, Category III overvoltage is different. In workplace safety, Safety Category 3 could also mean third level of hazard control. In construction, Safety Category 3 may refer to high risk work requiring extra precautions. In tractor operation, safety Category 3 might refer to safety level of PTO guarding. Overall, safety Category 3 indicates medium-high safety performance with redundancy and fault detection, suitable for applications where failure could cause serious injury but not certain death, requiring dual channels and some diagnostics, better than Category 2 but less than Category 4 which has continuous self-checking.
