Cat 3 is used for different purposes depending on industry. In tractors, Category 3 three-point hitch is used for large agricultural tractors 90 to 225 horsepower to attach heavy implements like large plows, disc harrows, and planters that require high lift capacity and strength. In electrical measurement, CAT III rating is used for test instruments to safely measure in building installations such as distribution panels, circuit breakers, and fixed wiring where transient overvoltages are higher than at outlet level. In networking, Cat 3 cable was historically used for telephone wiring and 10 Mbps Ethernet networks, though now largely replaced by Cat 5 and higher for data. In water damage restoration, CAT 3 classification is used to identify grossly contaminated black water from sewage or flood that requires professional cleanup with protective equipment. So Cat 3 is used to denote heavy-duty hitch capability, safety rating for electrical measurement, legacy cabling standard, or severe water contamination level, and its use depends on context.
