Standard fire insurance policies—whether standalone or embedded within homeowners packages—explicitly exclude several causes of loss and damage. Common exclusions include damage resulting from deliberate arson or intentional fraudulent acts committed by the insured, normal wear and tear, gradual smoke degradation over long periods, and damage caused by war, nuclear hazards, or government confiscation. Furthermore, standard fire policies do not cover structural damage if the building was left vacant beyond a specified consecutive number of days without notifying the insurance company to arrange specialized vacancy permit coverage.
