Sprinkler is device that distributes water over area in form of spray or droplets, used for irrigation of lawns, crops, gardens, and for fire protection systems that spray water when fire detected. In lawn and garden context, sprinkler is irrigation device that sprays water to simulate rain, keeping grass and plants watered, including oscillating sprinkler that moves back and forth, rotating sprinkler that spins, stationary sprinkler that stays in place, and in ground automatic sprinkler heads that pop up when activated. In agriculture, sprinkler includes center pivot and traveling sprinklers for large fields. In fire protection, sprinkler is automatic fire sprinkler head installed in ceiling that releases water when heat detected to extinguish fire. So sprinkler is called water distributing device, irrigation device, or watering device, with specific types called spray head, rotor head, impact sprinkler, drip emitter, or fire sprinkler head depending on use. General term sprinkler refers to any device that sprinkles water over area.
