How many sprinklers you can put on one line depends on water pressure, flow rate, pipe size, sprinkler type, and zone design, but general guideline is you can put 2 to 8 sprinkler heads per line or zone for typical residential system. Flow rate measured in gallons per minute determines capacity, for example if home supplies 10 GPM and each spray head uses 1.5 GPM, you can put about 6 heads per zone. Rotor heads use more water, 2 to 5 GPM each, so you may only put 3 to 5 rotors per zone. Drip lines use low flow so many emitters can be on one line. Pipe size matters, 3/4 inch pipe handles less flow than 1 inch pipe. Pressure also matters, too many heads reduce pressure causing weak spray. Designers calculate total GPM per zone not exceeding 75 percent of available GPM to maintain pressure. So for typical home with 10 to 12 GPM, you can put 5 to 7 spray heads or 3 to 4 rotor heads per line, and for drip, dozens of emitters.
