Many things can bite you at night besides bed bugs, so if you have itchy welts but inspection shows no signs of bed bugs like live bugs, dark fecal spots, rust stains, and shed skins in mattress seams and headboard crevices, consider other causes. Common nighttime biters include fleas, which bite ankles and lower legs, cause itchy welts, and jump, often from pets, mosquitoes that bite exposed skin and cause raised itchy bumps, often with buzzing sound, scabies mites that burrow into skin and cause intense itching especially at night, particularly between fingers and wrists, and is contagious, bird mites and rodent mites that bite at night if birds or rodents nest in attic, chiggers that bite in grassy areas and cause very itchy red bumps. Other non-biting causes that feel like bites include allergic reactions to detergents, soaps, or fabrics, eczema, hives, and dry skin. Dust mites do not bite but can cause allergic reactions. Spiders rarely bite at night and bites are usually single. To determine cause, inspect bed thoroughly with flashlight at night, use interceptor traps under bed legs to catch bed bugs, check pets for fleas, inspect attic for bird nests, and consider recent outdoor activities. If bites persist and no bugs found, see dermatologist and consider pest control inspection to rule out bed bugs and identify other pests.
