To trick bed bugs out of hiding, you need to exploit their attraction to host cues like carbon dioxide, body heat, and warmth, because they hide during day in mattress seams, box spring cracks, headboard crevices, behind baseboards, and furniture joints within 5 to 8 feet of bed and come out at night to feed. Effective tricks include using your own presence as bait by sleeping in bed with interceptor traps under bed legs that catch bugs as they climb, making bed an island by pulling bed away from walls and ensuring bedding does not touch floor so bugs must cross interceptors, which tricks them into traps. Commercial CO2 traps using dry ice that release carbon dioxide mimicking human breathing can draw them out from hiding into trap. Gentle heat from hair dryer on low applied to suspected hiding spots like mattress seams and cracks can cause movement and trick them out, but avoid high heat that kills before trapping. You can also use a flashlight inspection at night between 2 AM and 5 AM when they are most active, quickly turning on light to catch them exposed. Vacuuming with crevice tool can physically draw them out. However, bed bugs are not tricked by food, sweet smells, or sperm. The most effective trick is to sleep in bed with encasements and interceptors, as hunger will eventually draw them out despite repellents, and professional heat treatment draws them out and kills all stages including eggs.
