In architecture, engineering, and mechanics, a sump is defined as a low-lying pit, depression, or specialized reservoir engineered into a structure or machine to collect, accumulate, and temporarily hold unwanted liquids such as groundwater, wastewater, or engine oil. By providing a centralized basin where fluids naturally pool by gravity, a sump allows mechanical systems—such as automated sump pumps or oil pickup tubes—to easily extract and discharge the accumulated fluid away from sensitive areas, preventing flooding, mechanical failure, or structural damage.
