A residential sump pit is a cylindrical basin or liner—typically constructed of durable heavy-duty plastic, fiberglass, or perforated metal—embedded deep into the lowest point of a basement or crawlspace floor. The top rim sits flush with the concrete slab, covered by a secure plastic or metal lid to prevent debris from falling in and to block radon gas infiltration. Inside the pit sits the submersible pump unit connected to a vertical float switch, surrounded by clean gravel at the base to filter sediment and channel groundwater effectively.
