A rigid personality is personality style characterized by inflexibility, resistance to change, strict adherence to rules and routines, and difficulty adapting to new situations or viewpoints. People with rigid personality tend to be perfectionistic, orderly, and insist on things being done specific way, becoming anxious or upset when routines are disrupted or when others do not follow rules. They may be seen as stubborn, uncompromising, and set in their ways, with black and white thinking that lacks nuance. Rigid personality may show as need for control, difficulty with compromise, and insistence on own standards. In psychology, rigid personality traits can be associated with obsessive compulsive personality disorder where preoccupation with orderliness and control leads to inflexibility, but many people have rigid traits without disorder. Rigid personality can cause interpersonal difficulties because person may be critical of others who are more flexible, and may struggle with stress when faced with unexpected changes, preferring predictability and structure over spontaneity and adaptability.
