Being rigid means being stiff, inflexible, and unyielding, both physically and figuratively. Physically, being rigid means body or object does not bend easily, holding stiff posture. Figuratively, being rigid means person is strict, stubborn, and resistant to change, adhering strongly to rules, routines, and beliefs without adapting to new situations. A rigid person insists on doing things only one specific way, becomes anxious or upset when plans change, has difficulty considering other viewpoints, and struggles with compromise. Being rigid can show as need for control, perfectionism, and black and white thinking where things are only right or wrong. In behavior, being rigid means following routines literally and having difficulty transitioning between activities. While being rigid can provide structure and discipline, excessive rigidity can cause interpersonal conflict, stress, and difficulty problem solving because person cannot flexibly adapt. So being rigid means lacking flexibility, being firm and unyielding in body or mind.
