An uncastrated adult male donkey or ass is officially called a "jack" or a "jackass." In biological terminology, the term refers specifically to the male of the species Equus asinus. When this intact male breeds with a female horse, the offspring is a mule, whereas breeding a male horse with a female donkey produces a distinct hybrid known as a hinny.
