If you are caught by police or automated traffic cameras running a red light or failing to stop at an amber signalized traffic light in New Zealand, you will be issued a formal 150 New Zealand dollar infringement notice fine. In addition to the monetary fine, the traffic violation adds current demerit points to your driver's license record. Accumulating 100 or more demerit points within a two-year period results in a mandatory three-month driver's license suspension imposed by Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency).
