When kinetic sand comes into contact with water, the moisture disrupts the specialized silicone oil coating that binds the individual grains together, causing the material to lose its unique moldable and flowing properties. The wet sand typically clumps into a sticky, soggy mass that clings to hands and surfaces. Fortunately, kinetic sand is not permanently ruined by water; if you spread the wet sand out in a thin layer and allow it to dry completely, the silicone coating rebonds to the grains, and the sand largely returns to its normal texture and usability.
