If someone is reflecting, it means they are engaged in a deliberate process of looking inward and thinking carefully about their experiences, thoughts, emotions, and actions. They are not just remembering an event, they are trying to make meaning from it. This could look like someone sitting quietly after a busy day, replaying conversations in their mind and asking why they reacted strongly to something. It could be someone journaling about a life decision, weighing pros and cons and checking alignment with personal values. Psychologically, it means activating metacognition, which is thinking about your own thinking. Socially, it often means they are temporarily withdrawn, less talkative, and more observant because their attention is directed internally. It is generally a positive and healthy process that leads to greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, learning from mistakes, and more intentional future behavior, as opposed to rumination which is repetitive negative looping without learning.
