What does fire and theft car insurance cover in Australia, also called Third Party Fire and Theft, is mid-level cover between Third Party Property Damage and comprehensive, covering three main things. First, it covers your legal liability for damage you cause to other people's cars and property up to $20M, same as third party property, so if you hit another car, building or fence, it pays for their damage. Second, it covers loss or damage to your own car due to fire, including bushfire, car fire and arson, up to market or agreed value, minus excess. Third, it covers theft and attempted theft of your car, including theft of car itself and damage caused during theft like broken window and steering column, up to market or agreed value. It does not cover accidental damage to your own car if you crash at fault, which is main gap versus comprehensive, so if you hit pole and damage your own car $10K, fire and theft does not pay for your car, only for other person's damage. It also does not usually cover vandalism unless fire, flood, hail, or personal effects unless specified. Cost is between third party property $400 and comprehensive $900, typically $600 per year for $20K car. It is suitable for cars worth $5K to $15K where you want some protection for your car against theft and fire but cannot afford comprehensive, but for new or financed cars comprehensive is better because at-fault crash not covered.
