Is it worth getting fire and theft car insurance in Australia, which is mid-level between third party property damage and comprehensive, depends on car value and risk. Fire and theft, also called Third Party Fire and Theft, covers damage you cause to other people's cars and property up to $20M, plus loss of your own car due to fire and theft, but does not cover accidental damage to your own car if you crash at fault. Cost is about halfway, for example for $20K car, Third Party Property $400 per year, Fire and Theft $600 per year, Comprehensive $900 per year. It is worth it if your car is low to medium value $5K to $15K, older than 7 years, you cannot afford comprehensive but want some protection for your car against theft and fire which are common, with 50,000 cars stolen per year in Australia. If car is worth under $5K, third party property only may be enough, because paying $600 for fire and theft on $4K car is poor value. If car is worth $15K to $30K and you have loan, comprehensive is better because it also covers at-fault crash. For artists carrying artworks in car, comprehensive with contents cover is better. Fire and theft does not cover vandalism unless fire, nor flood, nor at-fault accident, so gap is big. So for $8K to $15K car parked on street with higher theft risk, fire and theft is worth it for extra $150 to $200 over third party. For new car or financed car, comprehensive worth it.
