External in simple words means outside, outer, or coming from outside, not inside. It means located on outside of something, outside of body, outside of building, outside of company, or outside of mind. For example, external walls are walls outside building that face outside, external appearance is how something looks on outside, external hard drive is drive outside computer, external factors are things coming from outside environment, not inside. In simple terms, if something is internal it is inside, if it is external it is outside. For instance, external wound is wound on outside skin, external noise is noise coming from outside room, external help is help from people outside your group. In business, external means outside company, as external consultant is person not working inside company but hired from outside. In personal, external validation means praise from other people outside yourself. So external means outer, outside, exterior, outside of system. Opposite is internal meaning inside, inner. So whenever you hear external, think outside, outer, or coming from outside, not inside.
