Efficacy in the Bible generally refers to the power or ability to produce a desired effect, particularly the effective power of God's word, prayer, and grace to accomplish spiritual transformation and salvation. While the word efficacy itself is not a common translation in most Bible versions, the concept is central throughout scripture, for example Hebrews 4:12 says the word of God is living and active and effective, showing that God's word has efficacy to penetrate hearts and change lives. In theological terms, the efficacy of Christ's sacrifice means that his atonement is fully effective to save those who believe, not merely potentially effective. The efficacy of prayer is discussed in James 5:16, where the effective fervent prayer of a righteous person accomplics much, meaning prayer has real power to produce results when offered in faith. In Reformed theology, the term efficacious grace or irresistible grace means that God's grace is effective in actually saving people, not just making salvation possible. So biblically, efficacy refers to God's power working effectively to fulfill his purposes, whether through scripture, prayer, or the Holy Spirit, producing real spiritual change and results in believers' lives.
