Standard earthquake insurance policies explicitly exclude several categories of damage. They generally do not cover losses caused by floods, tsunamis, or landslides triggered by an earthquake (unless separate flood or specific hazard endorsements are attached), nor do they cover fires resulting from seismic shaking, which are traditionally handled by standard homeowners insurance policies. Furthermore, policies exclude vehicle damage (covered by auto insurance), exterior masonry fences, landscaping, swimming pools, and pre-existing structural flaws present before policy inception.
