Different types of adjusters include staff adjuster, independent adjuster, public adjuster, and catastrophe adjuster, each working for different parties and handling claims differently. Staff adjuster, also called company adjuster, is employed directly by insurance company like State Farm or Progressive, handles claims for that insurer only, salaried with benefits, investigates and settles claims on behalf of insurer. Independent adjuster is contractor hired by insurance companies on as-needed basis, not employee, often works for independent adjusting firm, handles claims for multiple insurers, paid per claim, useful for surge after disasters. Public adjuster is hired and paid by policyholder, not insurer, advocates for claimant to get larger settlement, typically charges percentage of settlement like 10 percent, licensed but works for insured. Catastrophe adjuster, or CAT adjuster, is specialized independent adjuster who travels to areas hit by hurricanes, floods, wildfires, handling large volume of claims after disaster, often highly paid. Other distinctions include inside adjuster who works in office handling small claims by phone and photos, and field adjuster who inspects damage in person, like inspecting storage unit fire or water damage. Auto adjuster specializes in auto claims, property adjuster in home damage, liability adjuster in bodily injury. Each type has different loyalty, staff and independent work for insurer, public works for claimant.
