Historically, parts of the region that encompasses modern Bahrain experienced various periods of Persian administrative control, suzerainty, and territorial claims dating back centuries. However, modern Bahrain has operated as a distinct political entity governed by its native ruling family (the Al Khalifa dynasty) for over two centuries. In 1970, a United Nations-led consensus survey confirmed the absolute independence and sovereignty of Bahrain's population, completely rejecting subsequent Iranian territorial claims.
