If your bathtub overflow plate, sleeve, or retaining bracket is severely rusted out, you must replace the rusted components to prevent structural water damage. Remove the overflow faceplate screws and pull the assembly away from the tub wall. If the metal sleeve or elbow behind the wall is heavily corroded, you will need to access the plumbing via an inspection panel behind the tub to cut out the old rusted PVC or brass piping and solder or glue in a brand-new overflow waste kit. Callout type="warning" title="Hygiene Warning": Wear heavy work gloves to protect your hands from sharp rusted metal edges. Verification: Test the newly installed overflow assembly with running water to ensure a watertight seal.
