To replace a leaking rubber overflow gasket behind your bathtub, start by unscrewing the two bolts on the overflow faceplate and removing the metal plate and linkage assembly. Reach behind the bathtub wall, pull the old, degraded rubber gasket off the plastic or brass overflow elbow, and slide a brand-new tapered rubber gasket into place with the wide side facing the tub wall. Reattach the faceplate and tighten the screws evenly. Verification: Pour a bucket of water down the overflow opening and check behind the wall to verify zero leaks.
