It is somewhat common for standard residential air conditioners to struggle on exceptionally extreme heat waves, but a properly sized and maintained system should still maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Most standard air conditioning units are designed to cool a home by about twenty degrees Fahrenheit cooler than the outdoor ambient temperature. If outdoor temperatures soar well past design limits, or if your home suffers from poor insulation, leaky windows, dirty condenser coils, or a low refrigerant charge, the AC will struggle to keep up and run continuously. If your home remains uncomfortably warm despite the system running non-stop, it may indicate that your unit is undersized or in need of professional servicing.
