Performing a hard reset or complete electrical reboot on a residential wall thermostat depends on whether the device is battery-powered or hardwired directly to your HVAC system. For a standard battery-powered digital thermostat, you can execute a hard reset by removing the thermostat faceplate from the wall mounting bracket, taking out all the alkaline batteries, waiting approximately sixty minutes to let internal microprocessors and capacitors fully discharge, and then reinserting the batteries. For hardwired smart thermostats like a Nest or Ecobee, you can perform a hard reboot by removing the faceplate from the wall sub-base for a minute and snapping it back into place, or by navigating through the on-screen settings menu to select the factory reset option. If the device is completely frozen, cycling the main HVAC circuit breaker will also force a system reboot. You can verify success when the screen powers back on.
