You should drain a front loading washer in two different senses, and the frequency matters for odor prevention and machine health. First, the drain pump filter should be cleaned and drained every 1 to 3 months depending on usage and household size. If you have pets, wash heavily linted items, or have a large family doing 8+ loads per week, do it monthly. For average households doing 3-5 loads per week, every 2 months is sufficient. Second, you should run a tub clean or drain and dry routine after every wash day. This means leaving the door slightly ajar after each cycle to allow the drum and gasket to air dry, and wiping the rubber door gasket dry. Once a month, run the Tub Clean cycle with a washer cleaner like Affresh or a cup of white vinegar on hot water to dissolve detergent residue and biofilm. If the machine will sit unused for more than a week, or before moving it, you should also manually drain residual water from the emergency drain hose to prevent stagnant water odor and freezing damage. Regular draining prevents pump clogs, OE drain errors, and musty smells.
