The Hope Slide, which occurred on January 9, 1965, in British Columbia and stands as one of Canada's largest recorded landslides, claimed the lives of four motorists. The massive collapse unleashed approximately 47 million cubic metres of rock and debris down the face of Johnson Peak, burying a section of BC Highway 3 under up to 79 meters of pulverized stone and mud. The sudden, catastrophic failure caught passing travelers completely by surprise, and despite immediate emergency response efforts, all four individuals trapped beneath the massive debris field perished.
