How long it takes to get a courtesy car after an accident in Australia depends on your insurance policy, fault and availability. If you are not at fault and can identify the other driver, and you have comprehensive insurance with hire car after not-at-fault accident benefit, which is standard with NRMA, Allianz, AAMI, Budget Direct and Youi, you can usually get a hire car within 24 to 48 hours after lodging your claim and having it approved. Your insurer will arrange a rental car from Hertz, Avis, Budget or Thrifty and you collect it with licence and credit card bond, once your car is booked into repairer or assessed as not drivable. If your car is stolen, hire car is provided within 24 hours of theft report for up to 14 to 21 days until car recovered or claim settled. If you are at fault and you have optional hire car cover for $50 to $100 extra per year, you can get a hire car within 24 to 72 hours after claim lodged and your car is in repairer. If you do not have hire car cover, you will not get a courtesy car from insurer and must rent yourself. For repairer-provided free courtesy cars, which are loan cars owned by smash repairer, availability is limited, you may get one immediately when you drop off car for repair if they have one free, but many repairers have only 2 to 5 courtesy cars and they are often booked out, so you may wait 3 to 7 days or get none. To speed up, lodge claim online immediately, provide all documents, and ask insurer for hire car approval as soon as possible.
