How does a courtesy vehicle work in Australia is that it is a replacement car provided by your repairer, insurer or dealership while your own car is being repaired after an accident, theft or servicing, to keep you mobile. There are two main types. Insurer-provided courtesy car or hire car is included in many comprehensive car insurance policies. If your car is stolen, typically you get a hire car for up to 14 to 21 days until your car is recovered or claim settled. If your car is being repaired after a not-at-fault accident where you can identify the other driver, many insurers like NRMA, Allianz and AAMI provide a hire car for the duration of repair, often up to 21 days, with fuel and tolls at your cost. If you are at fault, hire car is only provided if you purchased optional hire car cover for $50 to $100 extra per year. Repairer-provided courtesy car is offered by some smash repairers as a free loan car while they repair your car, usually an old small hatch, and you only pay for fuel, but these are not guaranteed and subject to availability. Dealership courtesy cars work similarly when your car is in for warranty service. To get a courtesy vehicle, you must be over 21 or 25 depending on hire company, have a valid licence and credit card for bond of $200 to $500, and you are responsible for fuel, tolls, traffic fines and any damage excess of $2,000 to $4,000 if you crash the courtesy car. You must return it clean and on time or pay extra days.
