How does a publicly traded company make money?
Samsung Pay functions by digitizing your physical credit or debit cards into a secure, virtual representation that can be used at both contactless (NFC) terminals and traditional magnetic stripe readers. When you add a card to the app, Samsung does not store the actual card number on your phone. Instead, it uses a process called "tokenization." The bank provides a unique, encrypted "token" that represents your card, which is stored in a highly secure, hardware-encrypted area of your phone known as a Trusted Execution Environment. When you are ready to pay, you authenticate with your fingerprint, iris scan, or a PIN, which releases the token. For NFC terminals, the phone sends the token wirelessly to the card reader. For traditional magnetic stripe readers, Samsung devices utilize a proprietary technology called MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission), which emits a magnetic field that mimics the swipe of a physical card, allowing the older reader to "see" your phone as a standard credit card. Because the merchant never receives your real card number—only the temporary, encrypted token—the transaction is significantly more secure than using a physical card. If your phone is lost or stolen, you can remotely wipe the tokens, ensuring that your financial information remains protected even if the device itself is no longer in your possession.
