To hard reset your dryer to clear error codes, control glitches, and electronic failures, procedure works for most brands including GE, Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, and Samsung. First, stop current cycle: press and hold Power or Cancel button for 3 seconds to stop any running cycle, open door. Second, unplug dryer from wall outlet or turn off circuit breaker that supplies it, for electric dryers like GE GTD42EASJWW, turn off both breakers at panel as they use 240 volts, for gas dryers like GTD65GBMRWS, turn off 120-volt breaker. Third, wait at least 10 to 15 minutes to allow main control board and display board capacitors to fully discharge and clear memory and error codes like PF for power failure or E01 for control failure, some technicians recommend pressing and holding Start or Power button for 5 seconds while unplugged to drain residual charge faster, and opening and closing door. Fourth, plug dryer back in or turn breaker back on, dryer will beep and display may show PF or flashing time. Fifth, press any button to clear and select new cycle and press Start. Hard reset clears electronic glitches but does not fix mechanical failures like failed thermal fuse at 10 to 25 dollars, heating element at 30 to 80 dollars, or belt at 15 to 30 dollars that need part replacement. If reset does not fix problem after trying twice, call technician for diagnosis costing 75 to 150 dollars.
