On a standard Moen Posi-Temp shower cartridge where the hot water supply is piped on the left and cold water is on the right, the small alignment notch cut into the tip of the stem must point down toward the 6 o'clock position when the valve is turned off. Ensuring this exact orientation is critical for proper temperature mixing. If your hot and cold supply lines are reversed coming out of the wall, the cartridge can be rotated 180 degrees during installation to correct alignment.
