On a standard Moen Posi-Temp cartridge where the hot water supply is piped on the left and the cold water supply is on the right, the small alignment notch cut into the tip of the stem must point down toward the 6 o'clock position when the valve is in the off position. Ensuring this proper orientation is critical; if your hot and cold supply lines happen to be reversed coming out of the wall, the cartridge can be rotated 180 degrees during installation to align correctly with your specific plumbing setup.
