Laminate flooring does not contain solid real wood planks, but its structural core is manufactured using wood derivatives. The inner core substrate is built from high-density fiberboard (HDF) or medium-density fiberboard (MDF), which consists of compressed wood fibers and resin waste. Resting on top of this composite wood core is a high-resolution photographic image layer designed to realistically mimic the look of natural hardwood grain, protected by a clear wear layer.
